An Italian deal to launch an electricity company worth $1.3 billion

March 11, 2024

A2A and E-Distribution signed an agreement in the field of electricity in Italy worth $1.3 billion. The deal represents the establishment of a new company for the transmission of electricity generated from clean sources, in which A2A will have a 90% stake. The two companies will later allocate the remaining 10% to shareholders.

E-Distribution, a subsidiary of the Italian company Enel, will contribute the infrastructure and assets necessary for electricity transmission, and the agreement will result in an increase in assets related to electricity transmission – belonging to A2A – by 70%, i.e. an increase from 1.3 million to 2.1 million.

Enel will also benefit from this agreement. The agreement will contribute to the company’s ability to repay its debts by $1.3 billion, and will also contribute to increasing net income by $1.09 billion. In addition, the deal will contribute €1.4 billion to the company’s treasury. In order to be able to finance its planned investment projects by 2035.

Italy is currently focusing on the goal of carbon neutrality, which it aims to reach by 2025. The Ministry of Energy – through its Minister Gilberto Beccito Frattin – issued a decision banning the use of coal in generating electricity in all parts of the country except the island of Sardinia.

Despite Italy's interest in generating electricity from clean sources, it does not seek to generate it from nuclear energy. Italy is the only country in Europe that does not use nuclear energy to produce electricity.
