The Investment Authority in Iraq announced that it has taken measures aimed at implementing the first project to generate electricity from waste in Baghdad. The Chairman of the Investment Authority, Haider Muhammad Makkiya, indicated that Iraq is taking steady steps to implement sustainable environmental projects, and this was done during the conference to open bids for a treatment project. Waste and electricity generation.
In light of this, bids were opened for 15 advanced local and foreign companies in the Nahrawan area in the presence of an official ministerial and representative office on Sunday, March 31, 2024, and the project is considered part of the environmental reform projects for the Iraqi citizen, in addition to being the basic nucleus of the transition to clean energy and a sustainable environment.
The Deputy Chairman of the Authority, Salar Muhammad Amin, stated that the project aims to use modern technologies to convert waste into sustainable electrical energy, and is considered a civilized project and the first of its kind in Iraq. The Minister of Environment, Nizar Amidi, stressed that the project contributes to the implementation of Iraq’s international obligations in accordance with the Paris Agreement. It supports sustainability in the energy sector in addition to addressing electricity shortages and benefiting from carbon economies.
The project is considered necessary and essential as it aims to rid the capital, Baghdad, of waste at a daily rate of up to 9,000 tons, which negatively affects the lives of citizens and the environment. The project is considered a positive step that will help improve the environment and achieve environmental sustainability in the country.
