Giant steps towards achieving energy self-sufficiency: “Iraq” and “Total Energy” plan to complete two huge energy projects by 2025

April 29, 2024

Iraq seeks to achieve a qualitative leap in the field of energy by completing two huge solar energy and natural gas projects in cooperation with Total Energy by 2025. The first phase of the two projects aims to produce 50 million cubic feet of natural gas per day in southern Iraq. This contributes significantly to reducing dependence on imports and saving the energy needed to operate power plants.

These projects come within a huge agreement worth $27 billion that Iraq signed with Total Energy last year, and also include increasing oil production from the Artawi field in Basra Governorate, southern Iraq, in addition to establishing a solar energy plant with a capacity of one gigawatt and a gas processing facility with a capacity of 600 million cubic feet per day.

These renewable energy projects are of great importance to Iraq. They contribute to diversifying energy sources, reducing carbon emissions, and achieving environmental sustainability. In addition, these projects contribute to creating new job opportunities and stimulating economic growth in Iraq.

The Iraqi Prime Minister stressed the government’s commitment to providing all necessary support to ensure the success of Total Energy projects, stressing the government’s endeavor to develop the investment environment and improve its reality through supportive laws. These projects represent a huge step towards achieving energy self-sufficiency in Iraq, enhancing energy security and achieving sustainable development. They also demonstrate Total Energy’s good faith in cooperating with Iraq through the implementation of vital projects that contribute to achieving comprehensive development.
