Turkey invests $100 billion in renewable energy

May 2, 2024

In the context of the huge boom that Turkey is witnessing in the field of renewable energy, expectations indicate that investments worth $100 billion will be pumped into this sector over the next decade, as part of Ankara’s efforts to reduce its dependence on costly energy imports and achieve its climate goals.

According to statements by the Turkish Minister of Treasury and Finance, Mehmet Simsek, the rates of electricity generation from renewable energy sources in the country increased by nearly 50% during the month of March 2024, compared to the same period last year.

Official data indicate that the share of renewable energy in electricity generation reached 63.6% in March 2024, while other calculations indicate its stability at 55%.

Solar energy contributes most to this growth. It accounted for three-quarters of the new installed capacity of renewable energy in Türkiye during 2023.

According to the International Renewable Energy Agency, Turkey added about 58.5 gigawatts of clean energy sources last year, an increase of 4.5% from 2022.

These positive results are attributed to government policies supporting renewable energy, in addition to the attractiveness of investment in this field. Renewable energy projects contribute to a decrease in Turkey's oil and gas import bill by about $27 billion in 2023, compared to 2022.

This decline is expected to continue in the coming years as the contribution of renewable energy to electricity generation increases, reduces dependence on energy imports from the risks of fluctuations in global prices and supply disruptions, provides new job opportunities and stimulates economic growth, while also helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve quality. Air.

Turkey is making tremendous progress in the field of renewable energy, driven by huge investments and supportive government policies, and this growth is expected to continue in the coming years. Which contributes to reducing the energy import bill and improving energy security.
