“Abu Dhabi Energy” establishes new projects for energy storage battery systems in “Britain”

February 28, 2024

Masdar Arlington Energy, a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar), announced the start of implementation of two new projects for energy storage battery systems in the United Kingdom. The company laid the foundation stone for the two projects in their new locations, which are the Royal Barn Road station in Rochdale and the… Wilkin Road in Stockport.

The total capacity of the two projects is expected to reach 55 megawatts, and they will contribute to providing electricity to 25,700 homes. The projects are being developed on former industrial sites, as part of Masdar Arlington Energy's strategy to establish projects on lands that need redevelopment and rehabilitation.

The statement stated that Masdar Arlington Energy Company aims to develop a series of energy storage battery systems projects in the United Kingdom with a capacity of up to 3 gigawatt hours, and the announcement of the implementation of the “Royal Barn Road” and “Wilkin Road” stations comes a year after the company committed to investing £1 billion in energy storage battery system projects in the UK.

Energy storage batteries are a solution to the challenges of intermittency in renewable energy sources. The electricity generated from solar and wind plants is stored to be available during periods when these sources suffer from a lack of energy availability.

In October 2022, Masdar announced its acquisition of Arlington Energy, a UK-based company; This constituted a qualitative shift for the company from the role of an investor to a developer and active supporter of the transformation of the energy sector in the United Kingdom. Through this acquisition, Masdar became specialized in developing projects for energy storage battery systems and offshore wind power plants, with the aim of supporting the transition towards a sustainable energy future in United kingdom.
