Saudi Arabia and Egypt to Bolster Investments in Renewable Energy Projects

July 22, 2024

Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Dr. Mohamed Shaker, and Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Eng. Tarek El Molla, met with Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman in Riyadh to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation and partnership in the energy sector.

The discussions focused on exploring new horizons in renewable energy and following up on the implementation of the ambitious electricity interconnection project between the two countries, which is considered the cornerstone of a comprehensive Arab electricity grid.

The meeting addressed various aspects of cooperation, including the electricity interconnection project aimed at facilitating the joint exchange of energy. This project seeks to capitalize on the difference in peak times and load increases in both countries, maximizing benefits, improving surplus electricity management, and enhancing grid stability in both Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

The ministers highlighted their commitment to opening new avenues and increasing investments in renewable energy projects, including solar and wind power. This aligns with both countries’ policies and action plans to achieve sustainable development goals and enhance collaboration in transferring technical expertise and modern technologies for electricity generation, transmission, and distribution.

The meeting concluded with agreements on several collaborative initiatives to support and facilitate the joint pursuit of energy projects and strengthen electrical infrastructure.
