On Tuesday, December 19, 2023, the UAE-based Mubadala announced a new massive gas discovery in Indonesia. The company expects the discovered reserves to reach more than 6 trillion cubic feet, making this discovery the largest one in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.
Mubadala has drilled the deposit to a depth of 4208 meters in the concession area, which is located south of Andaman, about 100 meters from the Sumatran coast. The Emirati company, which is responsible for operating the joint production contract by 80% under the contract, stated that a huge reservoir of natural gas was accidentally found, with a thickness of more than 230 meters.
Gas was discovered after drilling of the “Layaran-1” exploration well in the “South Andaman” concession, which is located 100 kilometers off the coast of North Sumatra in Indonesia, according to a statement from a specialized energy platform.
The company indicated that a massive natural gas reservoir was found with a thickness exceeding 230 meters. After making the technical tests and analyzing the data, the gas flowed with excellent quality, exceeding 30 million cubic feet per day.
