The USA opposes reprimanding Iran over its nuclear file

June 5, 2024

The United States announced its opposition to a draft resolution at the International Atomic Energy Agency condemning Iran. For failing to fully cooperate with the agency and demanding more accountability.

The administration of US President Joe Biden, which seeks to restore calm to the Middle East, opposed it, fearing that the draft resolution would exacerbate tensions with Iran.

Britain, France, and Germany submitted the draft resolution to the Board of Directors of the International Atomic Energy Agency. The draft resolution condemns Iran for its failure to fully cooperate with the agency.

The resolution calls for more accountability. This step comes after Iran suspended its commitment to the restrictions imposed on its nuclear activities set by a historic 2015 agreement with major powers.

US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller confirmed that the United States has taken “significant actions” at the International Atomic Energy Agency in the past, and that it is “prepared to do so again in the future,” stressing that the United States will act “in coordination with its European allies” regarding Iran.

The United States faces a difficult challenge in dealing with Iran. It wants to avoid escalation, but it also wants to pressure Iran to comply with its nuclear obligations.
