Sales of electric vehicles in the UK declined in July 2024 amid an economic slowdown, prompting the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) to lower its overall car sales forecasts for the year.

While new car sales in Britain generally increased, consumer demand for electric cars has slowed considerably, raising concerns about the UK’s ability to achieve its climate goals.

This slowdown stems from weak consumer demand, despite the significant discounts offered by car manufacturers. The global economic crisis is negatively impacting consumer purchasing power, limiting their willingness to buy new cars, especially electric ones. Additionally, the bankruptcy of some electric car companies, such as the electric vehicle unit of China’s Evergrande Group, has further fueled market uncertainty.

This slowdown hinders the UK’s progress toward transitioning to a green economy and reducing carbon emissions.
