Ukraine Faces Power Outages Due to Generation Shortage and Hot Weather

August 19, 2024

Ukraine resumed power outages for some customers on Monday due to a generation shortage caused by Russian attacks on the grid and increased consumption due to the hot weather. Russia has intensified its missile and drone attacks on Ukraine’s energy sector since the spring, causing power outages in many areas and forcing Kyiv to start importing electricity on a large scale from the European Union. Ukraine’s electricity grid operator and the Ministry of Energy announced that outages would occur from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Kyiv time. In July, Ukraine imposed extensive energy supply restrictions due to repairs at several key nuclear power units amid unprecedented high temperatures. Power outages nearly disappeared in August after the nuclear units were restarted and temperatures dropped. Ukrainian officials stated that the country has lost almost half of its electricity generation capacity due to Russian attacks.
